The first written Valentine is traditionally attributed to the imprisoned Charles, Duke of Orleans, in 1415 the French nobleman was wounded and captured at the Battle of Agincourt during the Hundred Year’s War.
While confined in the Tower of London after the Battle, the young Duke reportedly passed his time by writing romantic verses for his wife in back in France, over his 25 year imprisonment, he is said to have written 60 love poems – one of these Valentine’s Poems is believed to be housed in the manuscript collection of the British Library and is credited with being the first modern day Valentine
